Blessed are the poor in spirit

“Blessed are the poor in spirit.” (Matthew 5:3)

It is important that we know the right definition of “blessedness”. “Blessedness” means the spiritual stature at which the believer has attained to the peak point of maturity. Blessedness is the condition where the believer is totally acceptable to God and is pleasing in the sight of God. Blessedness is a spiritual state where the believer has been molded exactly in to the image God wanted him to be and is worthy to receive the highest reward in the kingdom of God.
Every person wants to be really blessed. There is no one who doesn’t want to reach the blessedness in spiritual life. In fact Jesus came to this world to lead each and everyone of us to this spiritual mountain peak. That is the reason Jesus says in Matthews 5 chapter “blessed are those who have such and such qualities…”
First of all Jesus tells us that we must be spiritually poor if we must reach the highest peak in spiritual blessedness. Those words are misleading. “Spiritually poor” means spiritually meek. Spiritual poverty is not something desirable. In fact every child of Adam is already spiritually bankrupt. If we tell the bankrupt people to be spiritually poor they’ll respond saying “sir it is not possible for us to become poorer”!
The point here is that we must be meek in our spirit. Arrogance and pride are not great qualities. Pride takes us away from God’s presence and blessing. But meekness draws the presence of God closer to us.
I am not talking to worldly people but I am talking to people who love God and are seeking for Him. If we really want to have any worth value and stand before God we must cultivate meekness of Heart. Of course it is not easy to us as the children of Adam to cultivate meekness. It is going to be difficult but we must pray for the help of the Holy Spirit for cultivating humility and meekness. In fact Galatians 5:22 tells us that meekness is the fruit of the Spirit. So we can conclude that no one can be meek without the power of the Holy Spirit. This must be our desire and goal of life. We must perceive meekness and humility with the same eagerness with which we search for a lost diamond. Only such a sincere and earnest pursuit will make us successful. May God help us to be truly meek in our spirits!
